Hey, everybody! (All five of you).
I'm pretty much abandoning this blog in favor of my new space, The Little Kingdom!
Please join me over at http://littlekingryan.wordpress.com for postings of my newest artwork in my gallery, comics reading lists and reviews, artist spotlights of my favorite illustrators and comic book auteurs, and whatever else strikes my fancy! So, Starkoryan Art No More! Long live the Little King!

Wizard Boy
Another new drawing. Somewhere between penciling for straight black-and-white inking and a toned pencil drawing. Came out okay...

Too Long
Oh man, two months since my last post! Too long! Suffice it to say that I need to update this page a bit more, but mostly I've just been sketching a lot lately. Nothing really finished, and nothing really fit for public viewing. Let's see if I can't change that pretty soon...

Alien King
Kind of a take-off on that last sketch I posted, this time he's been transformed into the Alien King! He rules over a land of weird organic growths like the ones seen behind him.

Another Day, Another Page
Okay, I've just finished the third page of the commissioned project The Thirteens.
I thought this would be an interesting example of my process. First, I did a very small (2"x3") thumbnail directly on a printout of the script. Then, I fleshed it out a bit on a page of my sketchbook. I wanted to nail down the first two panels of the page, so I revised the rough with tighter pencils. Finally, I used a combination of lightboxing a re-sized print of the revisions and just winging it to complete the finished pencils. Hope you like!

Forward Progress on the Thirteens
Okay, here's my finished pencils for page two of The Thirteens project:

I'm really starting to learn just how challenging sequential art can be. I'm hoping by the time I get to the inking stage, I'll be much more relaxed, and able to go with the flow a bit more. As it stands, I'm fighting to get every panel to look acceptable to my perhaps slightly overblown standards. I'll fix it later!

The Thirteens
Here's some stuff I'm doing for a new commissioned project called The Thirteens by Matt Barrett. Left to right is the rough layout for page one, page one pencils, rough layout for page two, and a couple design sketches for a major element of the story:

More to come as it is finished!

Happy Halloween!
Not sure what this is for. I just wanted to draw Edward Scissorhands. Would prolly make a good Halloween Party invitation:

Hal Jordan & Sinestro
I did this to sell at a local comic shop at the suggestion of the owner. I kept things pretty loose and never got too precious with it. It turned out pretty well, the inkwash really helps add some dimension and separate some elements. All told, probably about four hours work. Pretty much right on schedule to be sold for about fifty bucks. It's 9"x12" and I'm putting it in a pretty cool frame. A pretty good piece to see if anyone's interested in commissions locally...

Finished Page Commission
A big Thank You to Jessica Moorman, who commissioned this piece. I think it came out pretty sweet, but I'm ready to change my style to something along the lines of Matt Feazell (http://home.comcast.net/~mattfeazell/index.htm) after going this crazily detailed and photorealistic:

Sandman
Just finished this for a commission. It's based on an earlier sketch. I gave it the full brush ink treatment, then went back in with a 2H pencil to add a bit of value, which I would usually do with inkwash but this was done on a sheet of Strathmore drawing paper that wouldn't support it.
